Time-series of condition factor (CF) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were generated using general linear models (GLM) for sardine Sardinops sagax stocks in the northern and southern Benguela ecosystems over the period 1984–1999. During this period the biomass of sardine in the northern Benguela remained at relatively low levels of <500 000 tons, whereas that of southern Benguela sardine increased 40-fold to 1.3 million tons. The GLMs explained 27 and 45% of the observed variation in CF, and 32 and 28% of the observed variation in GSI, for sardine in the northern and southern Benguela subsystems respectively. Whereas the sardine CF in the northern Benguela remained stable over time, that for the southern Benguela stock declined steadily during the study... |

The Momareto cruise was held from August 6 to September 6, 2006 on the new French oceanographic vessel Pourquoi pas? The ROV Victor 6000 visited three vent fields, ranging from 850m to 2300m, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The scientific objective of the cruise was to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities colonizing these active vent sites. Aside scientific and technological objectives, one of the major goals of this cruise was to share the excitement of our science with the public. For this, the results of the project were shared through different media. The most challenging and exciting communication event remains the real-time transmission of images acquired by the ROV Victor at 1700m depth to a 250 person audience on land. |

ABSTRACT Estimation of carbon stored in forest ecosystems requires accurate biomass prediction tools. The objective of this study was to determine the individual aerial biomass of Prosopis affinis and its distribution by component, to develop allometric models for the estimation of biomass and to estimate biomass expansion factors (BEF) in native forests of Entre Ríos (Argentina). Dendrometric variables on 30 individuals of different diameter classes were measured. Values of total aerial biomass and component biomass (trunk, branches larger than 5 cm in diameter and branches smaller than 5 cm + leaves, flowers and fruits) were determined using the destructive method. Different models were developed, and the best models were selected according to the... |

The Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) flanks the coastal areas of Angola, Namibia and South Africa, representing a unique upwelling ecosystem. Striving to establish effective management of the BCLME, the BCLME Programme is a multi-sectoral initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and further financial and in-kind contributions from the three member countries. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) implements the Programme and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is the executing agency. Communities in the coastal areas of Angola, Namibia and South Africa depend on the coastal and inshore resource for their survival and livelihood and therefore have a large stake in the management of this Large... |

The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Fate analysis predictions were based on mineralization of the parent toxicant compound as measured by chromatographic analysis or super(14)CO sub(2) expiration. Chitin, amended to continuous flow microcosms, promoted either cometabolic or cooxidative... |
